Our CurriculumThe established curriculum of the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School is the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. These standards clearly define academic expectations for student learning and ensure that all students are prepared to meet the challenges of society upon high school graduation.
What are the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)? The mission statement of CoreStandards.org states, “The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.” Why are the CCSS important? The standards are college and career ready. They help prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in education and training after high school. The standards are internationally benchmarked and ensure our students are globally competitive. There is equity in the Common Core Standards because expectations are consistent for all and not dependent on a student’s zip code. Is my child being taught the CCSS and how can I help? The state of Florida is one of at least 45 states that has adopted the CCSS. All students in grades K and 1 are taught following the CCSS. Students in grades 2 – 5 are exposed to more rigor through a blending of the CCSS and text complexity. Full implementation of the CCSS and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is scheduled for the 2014-2015 school year. You can help your child by attending workshops provided at our school, exposing your child to various genres, incorporating complex text into their leisure and informational reading, contacting your child’s teacher for additional support/ideas, and clicking the links below.
